In Memory
Pearl Nason: It was with the deepest regret that we learnt of the death of Pearl Nason on 3rd September last. Pearl became the first Honorary Membership Secretary of the RCAG in the summer of 1976 and continued in the post until early 1996, just a few months short of 20 years. Pearl and her late husband, Norman, joined the RCAG within a week or two of its formation in 1974 and both devoted tremendous time and energy to furthering the work of the group and in organizing and supporting all the Dublin Branch activities over the years. The RCAG offers its sincerest sympathy to her sons Brian and Alan and their families.
Duncan Bain: To many members of the RCAG today, the death of Duncan Bain on 4th April 2007 following an extended illness would have passed unnoticed. But those of us from the Dublin area who were active in the 1970s will remember Duncan as a founder member of the RCAG, which for the first few days of its existence lacked an ‘official’ name. After an initial recce of the canal two days after the formation of the group, the first work party met four days later at the twelfth lock on 10th April 1974 and afterwards retired to the Twin Oaks to elect office holders. It was on this occasion that several names were proposed for the group and it was Duncan’s suggestion of the Royal Canal Amenity Group that was adopted unanimously. Duncan gave enormous support to the RCAG in those early years and was also a member of the Royal Canal Committee of the Dublin Branch of the IWAI which spearheaded the campaign to restore the canal. As an estate manager and waterways enthusiast, Duncan brought a wealth of practical experience to the assistance of the group until his resignation from the Committee in 1977 following his election as Secretary of the IWAI. Our sympathy is extended to his wife Aggie, daughter Jane, son Callum and all the family.
