RCAG EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
In May, Membership Secretary Bridie Wheeler tendered her resignation. Chairman Watson Mills thanked her for all the work she had done over the years for the Group. Her place has been taken by Noel Spaine who was elected unanimously. This has been the only change of Office Holder this year. In future all matters relating to Membership and Subscriptions should be addressed to Noel at: 42 Martin Savage Park, Ashtown, Co. Dublin.
An evaluation of the Heritage Council’s 2004 Corridor Study of the Royal Canal in Westmeath and Longford is currently underway. At the July Meeting Mr. David Hickie, on behalf of the consultants, distributed questionnaires for completion and five RCAG branches have since responded.
At the September Meeting it was reported that boaters are having difficulty at Raleigh’s lifting bridge at the Downs where the banks are very steep. It was suggested that landing stages should be provided for safety reasons. Concern was also expressed about numerous locked gates which impede access to the Royal Canal Way and about cattle trampling the towpaths and damaging the banks at various locations. It was agreed that all these matters be brought to the attention of Waterways Ireland.
