The Royal Canal Amenity Group - Updated May 2010.

Formed as a local organisation in 1974, the original objective of the RCAG was to promote and participate in the development of the full amenity potential of the Royal Canal in County Dublin. From these small beginnings the group continued to grow and now has a membership of approximately 500. It was not long before the groups activities extended eastwards into the City and westwards into Kildare and Meath, and very soon it had assumed 'responsibility' for the whole canal. There are also very active branches in Westmeath and Longford.

2010 marks a major milestone in the history of the RCAG, as one of the goals we've been working towards since 1974 is finally within sight - visit our news page for more details!

The 2006 Mullingar Rally was a special one as the Royal Canal reached the town 200 years ago, therefore a monument was erected at Pipers Boreen to honour the many hundreds of people who left, some never to return.. (102 Pictures)

Tourism
As with all of Ireland's waterways the canal passes through some of Europe's most beautiful countryside and, whether you are on a boat, or simply on foot, you'll have ample opportunity to enjoy it all. The towpath that has been so lovingly cleared has now been designated The Royal Canal Way.
