ABBEYSHRULE BRANCH

Another interesting Year: 2007 was another interesting and successful year in Abbeyshrule for the local Branch of the Royal Canal Amenity Group, culminating in the Western Rally at the end of August, which is reported elsewhere. The canal continues to attract visitors who are very impressed with the canal project. The canal is becoming increasingly popular for boat owners who view it as an ideal location for boating. It is also widely used for fishing and an increasing number of people are also using the canal banks as a walkway. We are privileged and honoured to have such a wonderful amenity in our area and undoubtedly it will always be of immense benefit to our community.

Annual Canal Walk: The Abbeyshrule Tidy Villages Committee held their annual canal sponsored walk on Sunday July 22nd. The walk commenced at Brannigan Harbour and proceeded along the banks of the canal to Abbeyshrule Harbour. The weather was reasonably good on the day and a large number of participants took part in the walk. It again proved to be an enjoyable experience for all who participated in the walk. There was a barbecue at the harbour for the participants following the walk and the tidy villages committee were very pleased with the very generous sponsorship they received from the local community.

Tidy Villages Result: Abbeyshrule achieved an excellent result in this year’s Tidy Towns Competition. We have now progressed to second place in County Longford having increased our marks in the competition from 253 in 2006 to 281 in 2007. This was a major improvement and reflects the big effort put in by the local committee members and the FÁS workers. This year we maintained the canal area in an excellent state and we did further landscaping on the canal banks and we erected seating also. We are confident we will make further progress over the coming years in the competition and the canal will obviously play a major role in this regard.
